In the end, the U.S. may have ended up with the worst of both worlds. Regime opponents thought the U.S. backed Mr. Morsi for too long. Islamists believed Washington tacitly backed a coup.

"We've managed now to alienate both sides in Egypt," said Michele Dunne, a former State Department official who has advised the Obama White House on Egypt.

  2. Regarding the competitive eating:

First of all I notice that the winners are otherwise fairly normal sized if not slimmer than average. At that, all I can think of is Gordie's Pie-Eating Contest story (ending with the Barf-O-Rama) in the movie, Stand By Me, the protagonist of which is hardly thin.

    Regarding Egypt:

This is a demonstration, if nothing else, that the current administration isn't adept at handling foreign affairs. Of course, Obama embodies the relative lack of awareness of the US population regarding our place in the rest of the world. Whether the Media is simply telling us what they think we want to hear or is intentionally feeding us propaganda geared to keep us oblivious to our own political servitude, I have to note that it's negatively affecting our international image both politically and culturally.
